I know its probably a very small thing in your eyes . but I’m riding along this morning thinking its been a bit of an achievement battling all through last winter on my mountain bike .
Yes there was the odd occasion , I bottled out of riding , mainly due to the deep snow and black ice , but I did make it through the worst winter in 30 years virtually unscathed , well except for the pulled muscles in my shoulder when I fell off a few months ago.
The winter seems to have been very long this year , and I’m reminded that it actually started snowing on the 17th Dec , and seems to have been snowing ever since :)
Today seems to make it all worth it – though.
……..cleaving the half dawn light ………an eternal wash of pastel in a narrowing monochrome ocean ……the running wolves of winter still nipping at my heels………
………in a last breath of chill ……….
Now - I’m not a great Tolkien fan, but a line I do remember from Lord of the Rings seems to sum it all up , a lot better than I can…..”running wolves” ….indeed ….!!! :)
Anyway - this was spoken by Worm Tongue , one of the less salubrious characters from the story to Eowen from The Riders of Rohan , and its so powerful it actually stops her in her tracks - momentarily …….well before she cleaves his head off……
