Errrr ……….I somehow don’t think the words to that particular song are strictly correct :) , but to be honest, it really sums up the British attitude towards patriotism in general .
Whilst we may not be patriotic , we do have a strong sense of the past - here , which I do personally like.
Take Britannia herself – a Roman goddess .
Now – when the Romans conquered a country , they usually re – named it after one their own deities , and in our case it seems to have stuck , as one of the many names for this country is of course - Great Britain.
You can of course - have The United Kingdom if you wish , although what their citizens would be called , escapes me - Kingdomites – maybe :), and then you have all the individual countries England , Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland , but as it happens - Britannia only really applied to England, as the rest were deemed too dangerous to mess with…….. still are………. :)

The more modern depiction of Britannia , is of a woman - dressed in battle garb with a spear and shield - bearing the Union Jack , and this image used to be on nearly all of our coinage , but it seems she is now being - totally removed after 300 years !!!
Now of course , I’m just wondering why………………………………….
It can’t be sexism as Britannia is a woman , although racism is a distinct possibility - as the only known Roman depiction of Britannia is in…… * GASP *…..white !!! …. plaster………. f**k me….. better call out The Political Correctness Police , and send them back in a time machine to correct that one :)
Hmmmm ……talking of political correctness ………she could have possibly been a
gay disabled lesbian, as nothing says otherwise :) , so I reckon we should get these people who want her removed - in court for sexism and oppressing a minority .
The fact that Britannia is a mythological figure , probably won’t register – either :)
