FIRE …FIRE....!!!

Well today marked a very large victory in my eyes ………….
Ok what have I done , I hear you asking yourselves…….?
…………struck a blow for freedom in an oppressed society …….
…ensured the right to free speech .or maybe …resurrected - Habeus Corpus :)
Nah - something dead simple , but in my mind very essential , and that is - ensure my employer is now actually - appointing fire Marshall’s , as opposed to solely relying on people volunteering , which has been the custom in the past .
Now - what’s the difference I hear you all thinking , and more importantly – what’s the fuss ???
Well if you think about it it’s a big one and entails insurance , as if you volunteer you services , you are not insured - hence if you get injured , or heaven forbid killed - its your problem….
………….errrrrrr…. ok if your dead……….maybe not …:).
No seriously - this is all - regardless of the fact you are carrying out a legally required health and safety function, in protecting other employees , and of course - safeguarding your employers business. premises .
Unfortunately – this became an impassable situation a while ago , as our employer would simply not pay for the insurance that covered the essential fire marshals , hence everyone quiet rightly resigned their voluntary posts , this being a bad situation for both interested parties , but would you put your life at risk for nothing ???
This stalemate was sorted out last week, by me having to take the relevant
Fire Legislation to a Departmental Health and Safety meeting , and threatening to involve The Health and Safety Executive if a solution wasn’t found - immediately.
So today – lo and behold , what do I see in a Corporate Health and Safety memo to all staff ….. bearing nothing less , than that immortal phrase ………..
……………...“ Fire Marshals will be appointed “ ……………….
……..meaning that they are now covered by our employers insurance :)
Like I say in the scale of things it’s - absolutely minute – but it does make me feel a whole lot better, and it’s probably ….“ simple things , please simple minds ” ……syndrome :)
