This time around – I had actually made myself a very rough itinerary ……..
SHOCK , HORROR ……. and this was mainly due to the massive amount of places I wanted to visit , and you can probably guess where that was – yes that’s right - on the table at home, in the U.K
Never mind your anarchy……... ……….”I wanna be……. Itinerary….”:)
I usually visit Japan in late May as it is cooler and less busy , so the heat and mass of people was a bit of a shock, venturing out the next day , and not to put too finer point on it I was extremely hot and sweaty within a mere 10 yards or so :), so thank heaven for vending machines and ice cold air conditioned shops , the key is to keep hydrated, a point which was unfortunately - missed on a group of Italian tourists who couldn’t understand why one of their party was nearly passing out , at a temple I visited later in the day.
I saw them go and get one of the assistants at the temple to help them , but unfortunately this guy was fairly elderly and couldn’t speak English , so I asked if they spoke English , my Italian been confined to - Ferrari , pizza and ciao ;)
Luckily they could , so I explained their friend was severely dehydrated and gave her a bottle of water out of my bag and insisted she drink it , they then insisted in paying for the water , but in the face of good Anglo – Italian relationships I refused :) ,
Not to put too finer point on it - It was so hot I actually bought myself a traditional styled fan , and judging by the odd looks I was getting it must have been pretty unusual for a pasty faced – western guy to be wandering around with one , although I have subsequently learned it was the hottest Summer in Japan for 150 or so years
I had also arranged a trip to a place called Mount Mitake via a group called Tokyo Free Guide on Saturday , and had been in touch with a lovely lady called Akemi a few months before my departure , via e- mail
We met up , and set off on the train to Mt Mitake early that morning, joining in with the seasoned Japanese hikers as we went .
Now hiking up a mountain side in the Japanese summer , especially as the air got thinner as you climbed , does not really sound like a good idea , but believe me when you got to the top it was definitely well worth it , actually we cheated a little by taking the cable car up the first leg and walking the rest , needless to say even this was hard for us “poor” English , so a welcome hot bath and splendid country style Japanese meal again both arranged by Akemi was absolute and utter heaven
The following Sake tasting session , and stroll along the riverside was the perfect end to the perfect day .
