Now – I had checked out a whole load of places to go and see some local bands , but was advised that the majority of the basement clubs , probably did not have air con .
So considering it was 40 degrees with high humidity , I decided it was probably a very bad idea , especially - since I had taken to walking a few hundred meters then diving in to a shop to cool off , and yes - it was that oppressive for us wimpy foreigners :)
So Japanese Black Metal - will have to wait till next time:)
Talking of heat - I had been getting an odd brown mark appearing on various bits of me , and it took a while to realise due to the even excessive heat , my watch strap was actually bleeding colour , so it was off to the local Japanese watch shop with a “massive budget” of …………….1000Yen………………
Now - long term readers will know my stories of buying “ top class” watches in
Japan :) , and the epic tales of trying to adjust the time using only Japanese language instructions , when I got home - but not this time , as I bought a watch with hands only , and you may have thought I’d have cottoned on to this one earlier – wouldn’t you :)
When visiting a place called Odaiba ( Tokyo Bay) - I came across what I suppose was an exhibition of new Toyota cars,.
This was interesting just for the cars , some with - Kimono’s on them , one with a giant flower growing out of the top of it , and of course all the weird and wonderful - concept cars , the technology centre also had the Honda Robot from the television advertisements in it , as well as a wealth of old cars from all over the world .
Later - I sat having a drink near the ever present vending machine , watching the families and their children put their grubby hands all over the cars on display , and afterwards the highly discreet young ladies wandering up , and removing the hand prints as if they were never there , so they were pristine , and of course - ready for the next set of kids :).
The big plus of visiting Japan in the summer - as I have said earlier - is the roof top swimming pool of the hotel is actually - open..
Now - I’m not one for sitting around the pool type of holidays , but it was absolute and utter - bliss - after you have been trekking around the city all day in 40 degrees heat going for a swim .
The problem being - it seemed the water was icy cold , although the polar bears and icebergs should have given it away :)
Something I first noticed when I first got to Tokyo was a high pitched metallic noise , which I took to be some kind of alarm or maybe bird scarer,.The hotel had a rooftop garden next to the pool, and I discovered the actual source of the noise which was a huge Cicada :)
Now in my defence - we don’t have Cicada’s in the U.K., and as I had not been to Japan in the summer before - I hadn’t encountered them , especially as the flora and fauna of Japan is surprisingly similar to the U.K., the only real difference being the huge blue iridescent butterflies that dart around and of course the monster crows that wake you up at 3am - flying around the skyscrapers :)
