Uh - Oh ………..I’ve upset the JWW Faction ( John William Waterhouse – Pre Raphaelite artist ) with my comments about his paintings last week , by calling them “indistinct “ ………..whoops :)
Hmmmm …………I thought I’d got away with that , by singing the praises of
The Lady of Shalott and La Belle Dame Sans Merci , but obviously not :)……
………..The ‘ Faction are after my blood , rather like the NHS ….. last Friday :)
Art - as you all know is so subjective and divisive, and I should have really known better than having said this in the first place , considering my own track record which involves an unswerving tendency towards …………….and dare I say it ……….. ………………*GASP*…………….modern art ……!!! :)
To be honest - I actually made the self same comments in person at the Royal Academy whilst viewing the art itself , and wasn’t set about by the mass hoards of umbrella wielding JWW fans , as its just simply my opinion as compared to other
Pre Raphaelite pieces – that’s all, and yes , I do admit I’m not an expert on this subject , but I do have enough knowledge to offer at least , some thoughts and comparisons.
Saying that - I surprisingly liked a few more offerings by JWW after visiting the exhibition like – “the gal dead in the snow” ( St Eulalia) , or the “the witchy woman” ( Magic Circle ) , and of course Ophelia , but I’m afraid , his own version of …..
“ I am half sick of shadows …” pales in to comparison , when compared to Meteyard’s original……………. sorry - JWW ……:)
There are certainly no – “head in the pot “ ( Isabella ) , “ouch my back !!! “
( Marianna ) , “ English exclamations of Summer ( Flaming June ) , scowly women holding fruit…….GRRRRRR …. ( Proserpina ) , Rosetti’s ravishing redheads
( take your pick) or “gals traipsing up steps” ( Golden Stairs ) ,. “gal in orange” ( Sibylla Delphica) , “ look in to my eyes “ ( The Beguiling of Merlin ) - to name but a few :)
Again - I suppose I’m extremely lucky enough to view this all very close up , and not out of a book /on the net , and this ability has slightly changed my opinion of JWW, although I suspect not enough to avert the seeking of my O positive by his hordes :)
